Test format

Length

11–14 minutes, done face-to-face with a trained examiner and recorded for quality assurance.

Part 1 — Introduction and interview (4–5 minutes)

The examiner asks familiar questions about you — home, work, studies, family, hobbies.

Part 2 — Long turn (3–4 minutes)

You get a cue card with a topic, 1 minute to prepare, then speak for 1–2 minutes without interruption.

Part 3 — Discussion (4–5 minutes)

The examiner asks more abstract follow-up questions related to the Part 2 topic.

Scoring

Scored 1–9 in 0.5 increments across four criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation.

Example questions for all three parts

  • Part 1: "Do you work or are you a student?" / "What do you usually do at the weekend?"
  • Part 2 cue card: "Describe a skill you would like to learn. You should say what it is, why you want to learn it, how you would learn it, and explain how it would be useful to you."
  • Part 3: "Do you think it's more important to learn practical skills or academic knowledge?"

Tips that actually move your band score

  • In Part 1, give a full answer rather than one word — add a reason or a brief example, but don't over-extend into Part 2 territory.
  • In Part 2, use the full minute of preparation time to jot down one idea for each bullet point on the cue card, then speak for the full 1–2 minutes — running out of things to say costs more than small grammar mistakes.
  • In Part 3, it's fine to think out loud and explore an idea — examiners want to hear you develop an opinion, not just state one.
  • Natural hesitation is fine; the score drops for long pauses or restarting sentences repeatedly, not for thinking before you speak.

Practice speaking, not just reading about it

Reading about the format only gets you so far — the band score comes from speaking practice itself. FluentFox's AI conversation partner gives you a free way to practice speaking English every day, and our dedicated IELTS course adds exam-specific speaking practice, model answers and full mock tests.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the IELTS Speaking test?+

11 to 14 minutes in total, across three parts. It's done face-to-face with an examiner (or on a screen for IELTS Online) rather than a computer.

Is IELTS speaking practice free on FluentFox?+

Yes — the format, tips and example questions on this page are free, and every FluentFox account includes one free AI conversation a day for general speaking practice. Full IELTS speaking practice with model answers is part of our Pro exam prep course.

What band score do I need?+

It depends on the institution or visa requirement you're applying for — most ask for a specific overall band score, commonly between 6.0 and 7.5, so check the requirement for your specific application.

Can AI conversation practice actually help with IELTS speaking?+

It helps with the underlying skill the test measures — speaking fluently and coherently under time pressure — even though it won't score you like an examiner. Pair it with IELTS-specific practice (cue cards, timed answers) closer to your test date.

Does FluentFox offer a full IELTS course?+

Yes — see our IELTS exam prep course for structured units covering Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking, with practice tests and mock exams.
