Give your opinion on a familiar, everyday topic. 15 seconds to prepare, 45 seconds to speak.
Task 2 โ Integrated (read + listen, then speak)

Task 3 โ Integrated (listen, then speak)
Listen to an academic lecture, then summarise and explain the key points.
Task 4 โ Integrated (listen, then speak)
Listen to a short lecture on an academic topic and summarise it in your own words.
Scoring
Each response is scored on delivery, language use and topic development, then combined into a scaled score out of 30.
What makes TOEFL Speaking different from IELTS
IELTS Speaking is a live conversation with an examiner. TOEFL Speaking is the opposite โ you speak into a microphone alone, and three of the four tasks are integrated, meaning you have to read or listen to source material before you answer. That makes note-taking a genuine speaking skill for TOEFL, not just a listening one.
Tips for each task type
- Task 1 (Independent): pick a clear position immediately โ don't waste your 15 seconds of prep time weighing both sides. One reason with a brief example is enough for 45 seconds.
- Tasks 2โ4 (Integrated): take short notes while reading and listening โ a few keywords per point, not full sentences โ then speak from those notes rather than trying to remember everything.
- Structure matters more than vocabulary โ a clear setup, 2 main points and a brief wrap-up scores better than ambitious language that runs out of time.
- Practice speaking for the exact task length (45 or 60 seconds) with a timer, since running out of time mid-sentence costs more than finishing a slightly shorter answer.
Practice speaking daily, not just before the test
Because TOEFL Speaking is computer-scored and done alone, it rewards comfort talking without a conversation partner โ which takes practice to get used to. FluentFox's AI conversation partner gives you a free way to build that comfort every day, and our TOEFL exam prep course adds task-specific speaking practice with note-taking templates.
Frequently asked questions
How long is TOEFL Speaking?+
17 minutes in total, across 4 tasks. All responses are recorded and scored by computer rather than a live examiner.
What's the difference between Independent and Integrated tasks?+
The Independent task (Task 1) asks for your own opinion on a familiar topic. The three Integrated tasks (2โ4) require you to read and/or listen to material first, then speak about it โ testing your ability to combine skills under time pressure.
Can I take notes during TOEFL Speaking?+
Yes โ note-taking is expected and encouraged, especially for the Integrated tasks, since you need to reference details from what you read or heard.
Is TOEFL Speaking harder than IELTS Speaking?+
Neither is objectively harder โ they test different things. TOEFL rewards comfort speaking alone into a microphone and combining skills; IELTS rewards comfort in a live conversation. Many people find one noticeably easier than the other based on their own strengths.
Does FluentFox have a full TOEFL course?+
Yes โ our TOEFL exam prep course covers Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, including Speaking practice for all 4 task types.
